Day Nine: Oops

Today I was just about ready to get going (no really) when my friend came over with her deathly ill computer. As her SO is the miracle worker who got my car going last year (and he gave it some TLC tonight) I dropped everything to help.

I did not help so much as I’d hoped. She has one of those nasty malware things, that tries to pretend it’s an anti-virus and BOY do you need it! And I can’t get rid of it. Task Manager doesn’t work, AVG won’t install…and I can’t hook it to my internet. So I can’t get Spybot to work, because it wants to update first.

Argh.

Anyway. Looks like I might be reformatting it for her–if she has the discs.

So yeah. That’s how I spent my evening.

  1. Did you try resetting the computer back to a restore point prior to the malware installation, and then installing AVG from there? I had to do that with my desktop when photobucket randomly downloaded the same type of malware.

You could try it, if you haven’t already. Was a godsend for me. *hugs*

  2. There are, mysteriously enough, NO restore points saved on the computer. This one is a right bastard! Kami suggested reformatting, and I’m thinking she’s right.

I say we take off, nuke the site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure. /geekglee

  3. Aw, man, I was just reading up on this. That is one nasty, nasty kind malware that’s getting way too popular.

*vibes to you and your friend* Is the malware Internet Security 2010, by any chance? [There are instructions to disinfect here, but if you friend can take it (as in, all her important stuff’s backed up or she can live having her ‘puter wiped), I’d say NUKE THE SUCKER. It really is the only way to be sure. 😛
