World-Building Challenge

So I feel the need to do something with this blog o’ mine, and I can’t bring myself to follow the A-to-Z crowd as so many are doing right now. (I think it’s a great idea, and I’m sure it’s awesome, but I get this stubborn streak sometimes, and it hits me at the worst times…)

Anyway. I stumbled on a link for a thirty-day world-building challenge the other day, and I’m going to do that. And since I’m awful at putting things off for no good reason (yes, I’m easy if I wanna be) I’m going to start tomorrow.

What world? I have no idea. No, that’s not true–I probably have too many ideas. Flame’s world could use some fleshing out, and so could Hiro’s, but both have a bit too much done already–I’d feel as if I were cheating. (Not to mention there’s enough cool stuff set that I wouldn’t want to give it away.) I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to add a bit to Fidelis’ world, though I don’t really see them getting out of the city…and I have tons of planets in Dream’verse that need more facts connected. There’s also my Victorian Ghosthunting Boysmut, but again, that’s going to be pretty urban. (Besides, all I want to do with them is write smut. >_> )

So depending on how structured the challenge is (I’m deliberately not looking ahead) this could get pretty messy. I may bounce all over the place. I may decide to build a world and populate it later (this would be foolish since I already have six universes…oh, hey. Nemesis. I could build HER world a bit…)

See what I mean?

Anyway. If you’d care to join me, drop a link in the comments and we’ll commiserate and stuffs. The challenge is designed to take around fifteen minutes a day, so it’s not a major commitment. (On your part. Knowing me, I’ll take it to extremes.)

Please, though, if you love me–if I start coming up with a whole new universe and characters to populate it, I’m gonna ask that someone smack me.

  1. The formatting on that blog…! Ow, my eyes! That said, sign me up.

Only question is, which world? Hmm. Aithne’s world is pretty well set from a climate/geography standpoint but could really use more cultural worldbuilding. My steampunk world is in space, so it doesn’t have climate, but fleshing it out more before I go back to that story might be useful. Then there are several stories I haven’t written yet that need worldbuilding before I can write them. Those might be good. Only, I can think of at least three that would qualify.

Well, I can do the first day without picking one… 😉

  2. If I wasn’t already doing the A to Z challenge I’d jump on this. I’ve got a whole list of stories I could choose from to create the world. Aleran is already done, for the most part, with the world building. What tweaks it needs I can do on my own and wouldn’t want to be accused of cheating. I just don’t think, with the A to Z challenge & my SFU each week I’m up to adding ANOTHER blogging challenge to my plate.

But I’ll be cheering you on while you do it.

  3. I had already created a world when I discovered this site. It wasn’t called a challenge when I did it last September. It was “Fantasy WorldBuilder Guide”, but its layout of 30 days was the same. I went through it and made many additions and a few changes to my world. I consider this series of exercises extremely valuable and completely worthwhile.

    1. Yeah, I made it a challenge ’cause it’s a challenge for me to stick to it. 😀

I’m glad to hear good things about it! It’s definitely less intimidating than many other worldbuilding plans I’ve seen, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m getting good stuff.
