No, Really?

If I were held for three years with no lawyer, no charges, no trial, and no hope, I’d be doing just about anything to get media attention myself.

Quoting from this site: CNN.com “…Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said earlier this week that the prisoners (at Guantanomo Bay–me) were on hunger strikes to get media attention…”

Is it me, or is Rumsfeld trying to make it sound like these are just children holding their breath to get candy in the checkout aisle?

“Since August 8, the number of detainees refusing to eat has risen from several dozen to about 128, about a quarter of the prison population, according to the Pentagon

Many of the facility’s roughly 500 prisoners have been held for more than three years without being charged or having access to a lawyer.”

Before you start about how “they’re terrorists, they deserve it,” remind yourself they have not been tried. They have not even been charged. Are we Americans or not?

That bears repeating. Are we Americans or not?
