I Lost My Book

I think it might be in my trunk. I hope it’s in my trunk!

Time was, this never would have happened. Back in school when I read a book a day most days, my book would not have left my hand long enough to get lost.

I still can’t quite believe it. I’ve been waiting MONTHS to start that book (Empire of Ivory, fourth in the Temeraire series) and I finally start it and TWO HOURS LATER (as best I can reconstruct) it’s missing.

Let me start at the beginning. Last week was a bit of a whirl. We went places, ran errands, did things. At some point in all that, I stuck a notebook, a magazine, and Empire of Ivory in a canvas bookbag and slung the bag over my shoulder after my purse. We went somewhere, bag staying in the car. We went…possibly somewhere else. At some point in the excursion, I know we went to some sort of fast-food restaurant where I started, at long last, reading my book.

I cannot for the life of me remember what happened to the book after that. I probably put it back in the bag–that’s very like me. But I can’t find the bag. So not only is my book missing, so is my notebook with who knows what in it. Maybe important story notes. Maybe deeply personal stuff. Maybe brain-wanderings of the most inane and embarrassing sort. I don’t know.

There’s a possibility it’s in the trunk of my car. I think I asked the kid at some point to take it to the car while I walked in a different direction for some reason. If that happened, though, we then piled a bunch of stuff or possibly groceries on top of it (depending on which day) and then it stayed in the trunk when all the other stuff came in. And then all the recycling got piled on top of it, and I keep forgetting to stop and drop that off.

So this whole rant may be about my book being “lost” in my trunk.

But I don’t know.
