April, You are on my Watch List

April, You are on my Watch List

So this morning I hit “enter” to wake up my hibernating computer, and things happened–but my screen did not come on. My monitor remained in “sleep” mode because it wasn’t getting anything from my computer. After stressing a bit over “did I save everything? Am I going to lose anything?” I realized I really had no choice, and did a hard restart.

I don’t think I lost anything. I am thankful that my compy came back to me. But I’m worried. I’ve been having issues with the graphics off and on–weird stuff flying by, windows sometimes twitching as I try to work in them…and these things get better when I run CCleaner to scrape out the deadweight.

One bit of advice I read was to “replace things, one at a time, until it works.” Yeah,  I don’t like that plan.

Yes, I have a laptop, and a netbook. But they are satellites. This, my desktop, on the desk I built (okay, put together) myself, is Home Base.

So I keep wandering off to look at Dells today. Then I go and look at the bank account and sigh and drag myself back to writing-work.

Next–when my screen came on and my stuff did become accessible, I discovered that Amazon STILL didn’t have Queen’s Man up for Kindle–though my dashboard said it was live.

Argh.

Then I checked for the print edition of Queen’s Man. It should have been ready for me to approve, but I had no email.

Createspace wanted me to know that the spine title was too big. “Just use this formula to figure it out and fix it!” So I used the formula and found that my spine title was smaller than their formula said it had to be.

Whatever. I changed it, as I couldn’t move forward without doing so, and resubmitted it. Sometime in the next forty-eight hours I may be able to make the print edition available.

I’ve said repeatedly that I like the control of self-publishing. That I probably wouldn’t take the traditional publishing route if it were offered to me. Now I’m thinking…okay, maybe I would. How marvelous to have all this be someone else’s problem to fix. I’d still worry–I’m like that–but I wouldn’t be taking my precious time to fight it. Someone else would be paid to deal with it. And someone else might have an 800-pound gorilla behind them to help argue with Amazon.

Also, itty bitty grumbly gripe–I wish when people want to give half stars on reviews, that they would do it in the mathematically-sound way of rounding UP. Since anyone can see the results of their vote at glimpse, but that person would have to go to the review to see the .5 part.

Sigh.

Anyway. It’s April. Queen’s Man is out there (I hope!) And I think I deserve more coffee. It’s the least I can do to turn this day around.

I hope your day is going better than mine.
