About #3GoodThings

So the other night I sprung #3goodthings on a friend, and it occurred to me I’ve never explained it. Sometimes I just do it, and sometimes people join in. In my head, this is how it works. YMMV.

Negativity is everywhere, and the internet makes it easier to shout our complaints into the ether, so a lot of people spend much of their internet time doing just that. I don’t think that’s such a great thing. I’m a big fan of snark, but I don’t think everyone everywhere should be doing it all the time.

#3goodthings is a way to count your blessings. I do it on Twitter when I remember, and I have a couple friends who do the same, and I love seeing it in my stream.

The rules are pretty easy. First, thou shalt count to three, and the number of thy counting shall be three. Do not stop at two, neither shalt thou go on to four, and five is right out.

Second, it needs to be a good thing that is making you happy/giving you comfort in your life NOW (or at least, on the day in question.) If your good thing is a chai latte but you haven’t had money for one in days and that makes you anxious as you think how broke you are–hell, I’m sorry. Have a hug. And think of something else. It’s there, I promise. If nothing else turns up, you know that when you’re tweeting about #3goodthings you can count off air, the ability to communicate, and internet.

Right now I’d go with coffee, a cuddly cat, and fall weather. Or shiny new dice, 750words.com, and the way an in-tune guitar sounds good, even in the hands of a rookie.

See? It’s not so hard. Now you try. Here or on Twitter, let’s have your #3goodthings.

  1. 1. I’m editing!

    2. Well, I was editing five minutes ago. Now I’m a fifteen minute break. Breaks are good! So is productivity!

    3. Singing is fun! I’m doing THAT.

  2. Three good things right at this moment? Let’s see…
    1. Mother has left for lunch with friends, and then she’s getting her hair done. At least 4 hours free! \o/
    2. Just got a call about the paperwork for running my background check for that temp job. Apparently they DO want me. (The delay was starting to make me wonder if they didn’t need as many temps as they originally asked for.)
    3. I have Mountain Dew again! After being out for nearly 2 weeks.

  3. Oh, do I ever need this right now.

    1. Books. (Currently reading GREAT EXPECTATIONS, but really, as long as I have access to words in narrative form, life can’t be all bad.)
    2. Fancy lattes.
    3. The fact that I can vote in my own apartment building.

Yup. Those are some serious comfort things on that list. It’s gotta be bad. 😛 Though not all bad, per #1.
