World-Building Challenge

So I feel the need to do something with this blog o’ mine, and I can’t bring myself to follow the A-to-Z crowd as so many are doing right now. (I think it’s a great idea, and I’m sure it’s awesome, but I get this stubborn streak sometimes, and it hits me at the worst times…)

Anyway. I stumbled on a link for a thirty-day world-building challenge the other day, and I’m going to do that. And since I’m awful at putting things off for no good reason (yes, I’m easy if I wanna be) I’m going to start tomorrow.

What world? I have no idea. No, that’s not true–I probably have too many ideas. Flame’s world could use some fleshing out, and so could Hiro’s, but both have a bit too much done already–I’d feel as if I were cheating. (Not to mention there’s enough cool stuff set that I wouldn’t want to give it away.) I’m sure it wouldn’t hurt to add a bit to Fidelis’ world, though I don’t really see them getting out of the city…and I have tons of planets in Dream’verse that need more facts connected. There’s also my Victorian Ghosthunting Boysmut, but again, that’s going to be pretty urban. (Besides, all I want to do with them is write smut. >_> )

So depending on how structured the challenge is (I’m deliberately not looking ahead) this could get pretty messy. I may bounce all over the place. I may decide to build a world and populate it later (this would be foolish since I already have six universes…oh, hey. Nemesis. I could build HER world a bit…)

Anyway. If you’d care to join me, drop a link in the comments and we’ll commiserate and stuffs. The challenge is designed to take around fifteen minutes a day, so it’s not a major commitment. (On your part. Knowing me, I’ll take it to extremes.)

Please, though, if you love me–if I start coming up with a whole new universe and characters to populate it, I’m gonna ask that someone smack me.

  1. The formatting on that blog…! Ow, my eyes! That said, sign me up. :mrgreen:

    Only question is, which world? Hmm. Aithne’s world is pretty well set from a climate/geography standpoint but could really use more cultural worldbuilding. My steampunk world is in space, so it doesn’t have climate, but fleshing it out more before I go back to that story might be useful. Then there are several stories I haven’t written yet that need worldbuilding before I can write them. Those might be good. Only, I can think of at least three that would qualify.

    Well, I can do the first day without picking one… 😉

  2. If I wasn’t already doing the A to Z challenge I’d jump on this. I’ve got a whole list of stories I could choose from to create the world. Aleran is already done, for the most part, with the world building. What tweaks it needs I can do on my own and wouldn’t want to be accused of cheating. I just don’t think, with the A to Z challenge & my SFU each week I’m up to adding ANOTHER blogging challenge to my plate.

    But I’ll be cheering you on while you do it.

  3. I had already created a world when I discovered this site. It wasn’t called a challenge when I did it last September. It was “Fantasy WorldBuilder Guide”, but its layout of 30 days was the same. I went through it and made many additions and a few changes to my world. I consider this series of exercises extremely valuable and completely worthwhile.

    1. Yeah, I made it a challenge ’cause it’s a challenge for me to stick to it. 😀

      I’m glad to hear good things about it! It’s definitely less intimidating than many other worldbuilding plans I’ve seen, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m getting good stuff.
