Fascist? Or Scary Black Man?

I can’t understand. I just can’t. Unless it’s an unthinking reaction to letting the scary black man near your children when you aren’t around (which on its own is disgusting; to hide it behind “the fascist wants to indoctrinate in an hour speech over the TV and my last ten years or more of raising this child as a proper human being will be out the window!!” bullshit is worse), what the hell is all this furor about?

Reagan did it. George H.W. Bush did it. George W. Bush went into the elementary schools to talk to students.

So it’s okay for the Republicans to talk to the kids, but not a Democratic president? Is that it? Or is it something a little more visceral?

I’ll admit to this. I know some black men. I’ve never met a violent one. Yet when I tell the story of a small meek friend who was once amusingly startled by a customer, I have to think ahead to leave “black” out of the “big biker dude” description. Because to my built-deep and not-yet-rooted-completely-out prejudices, a black man is scarier. Makes the story more funny.

So, to all you people out there freaking out–I did it. I admitted to racist thoughts. Can’t you look a little closer and see if that’s your problem too? Because seriously–if you’re honestly afraid that all your years of raising your child can be destroyed by one hour of a tiny face on a TV screen all the way across a classroom–you might want to examine your parenting methods.
